• RANGE . The boreal and temperate zones of Eurasia to the Chukot Region and Japan.
• DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. The European part, the Caucasus Major, Siberia, the Altai and Sayan Mts. - the nominate subspecies. From other parts of the range, the following forms are known: ssp. orientalis Staudinger, 1892 (= arctica Verity, 1908; = karaganica Kurentzov, 1970) - the Far East, Kamchatka, Transbaikalia, the Amur region; ssp. aias Fruhstorfer, 1903 (= sugitanii Esaki, 1929; = nekkana Matsumura, 1939) - the Ussuri region; ssp. sachalinensis Matsumura, 1919 - Sakhalin.
• HABITAT AND BIOLOGY. A characteristic species of various types of moorland. Flight period: June-August. The principal host plant (Eckstein, 1913; Graeser, 1888; etc.): Vaccinium uliginosum.
• SIMILAR SPECIES. C. chippewa: smaller; UPS dark border narrower, on HW reaching only the vein Cul; genitalia different.
